The Joseph W. McCarthy Memorial Scholarship
Study in Ireland

Award: The winner of this competition will receive a scholarship for Fall 2008 at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) in Galway, Ireland. The scholarship covers round-trip air fare from Detroit or Chicago and tuition, room and books at GMIT.

Eligibility: Entrants must be enrolled in an academic program at North Central Michigan College for the 2007-08 school year and must be prepared to submit an essay on the following topic:

“How do the political values of Robert Emmet, Irish patriot and namesake of Emmet County, relate to our world and our lives today?”

Applicants will be briefed on the writing part of the competition.

Research materials about the life and times of Robert Emmet are available at the North Central library and must be consulted and cited in the essay, if the essay is to be seriously considered. See a librarian for assistance.

Criteria:   

  • 1,000 words minimum, 2,000 words maximum
    Typed, double-spaced
  • Source material for factual information must be cited in footnotes and a bibliography page
  • Title page showing:
                Title
                Essayist’s name
                Home address, phone number and email


Submission deadline:  April 7, 2008

Competitions process: Three finalists will be chosen for interviews in April based on the quality of their essay submissions as judged by a panel of three readers from NCMC and the Robert Emmet Society. Finalists will be interviewed during the week of May 1 by a panel representing NCMC and the Robert Emmet Society who will also consider the essay results and student records at NCMC. The scholarship winner will be announced during graduation week. Awarding of the scholarship is contingent on the committee’s decision that a candidate has emerged from the essay competition and interview process who will be an outstanding “ambassador” of the college and our community.
