North Central Michigan College invites the public to the Petoskey campus on Saturday, March 8, for a “family fun and fitness open house” to commemorate the college’s 50th anniversary. The school was founded in 1958.
Activities in the Student and Community Resource Center begin at 10 a.m. with open basketball, Hapkido and Tae Kwan Do demonstrations and games for children. At 11 a.m., there will be Pilates, stretching, open volleyball, “P.I.G.” basketball, a kickboxing demonstration and activities led by the fitness staff on the track.
At noon, rugby, hacky sack, and Tae Kwan Do demonstrations will take place along with basketball, dodge ball, yoga and a lecture on physical conditioning by North Central fitness specialist Ed Hara.
At 1 p.m., North Central earth science professor Kurt Yuengling will lead a snowshoeing tour of the natural area on the edge of the campus. In addition, dodge ball and kids’ games will continue along with rugby and kickboxing demonstrations. Pilates and a gymnastics demonstration will take place at 1:30 p.m.
The energy level will be kicked up a notch at 2 p.m. when the Petoskey High School Steel Drum Band provides the music for exercisers.
Open full-court basketball and volleyball will resume at 2:30 p.m. The open house will conclude at 3 p.m.
The event is free. In addition, the first 100 people to come in will receive a free commemorative towel from the fitness staff.
“Our fitness specialists are ready and eager to help people boost their energy levels and their overall health by some good old-fashioned exercise, music and fun,” said Maggie Daniels, R.N., director of the North Central’s Student and Community Resource Center. “It’s a great way to start getting in shape for spring.”
North Central Michigan College is an open-door community college based in Petoskey. Through its University Center partnerships, students can take courses leading to certificates, bachelor’s and master’s degrees from participating universities. North Central’s Institute for Business & Industry Training offers non-credit job skills training tailored to meet individual needs.
