MEXICAN MUSIC AND COMIC BOOK ART FEATURED AT NCMC
Music from Mexico and comic book art will be the subjects of two programs
open to the public next week at North Central Michigan College in Petoskey.
On Tuesday, March 13, the Dallas, Texas-based "Banda de Brujos" or "Band of
Sorcerers" will present an evening of music from Mexico and a discussion of
immigration and border issues. The group will explain trends in
cross-cultural Mexican-based music from Nortenas, Mariachi and Tejano mixed
with jazz and improv, and the role this music is playing in the lives of
Hispanics who have moved north. Bandleader Dennis Gonzalez teaches Latino
music, Spanish, French and jazz studies at North Dallas High School.
The program will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Library conference room. It
is sponsored by the Michigan Global Awareness Consortium. Admission is
free.
On Wednesday, March 14, comic books will be the subject when Arlen Schumer
appears on campus as part of the college's Lecture Series. Schumer is one
of the foremost historians of comic book art and the co-founder and partner
of Dynamic Duo Studio. His book, "The Silver Age of Comic Book Art,"
documents the highly influential era in comic books from 1956 to 1970. The
program takes place at 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Admission is free.
