SPRING ARBOR UNIVERSITY BRINGS SOCIAL WORK DEGREE TO NORTH CENTRAL MICHIGAN COLLEGE CAMPUS IN PETOSKEY

Spring Arbor University will soon offer a bachelor's degree completion
program in social work (BSW) in Petoskey.

Slated to begin in February 2008, the program is designed to accommodate
students' busy lifestyles. The cohort will meet one night a week for four
semesters. Program participants can complete 49 credits in less than two
years.

Admission into the program requires 58 semester hours which can be earned
through testing and approved courses taken at accredited institutions
including North Central Michigan College. Specific prerequisites are
required to enroll.

The social work curriculum builds on theory and knowledge of the liberal
arts, with special emphasis on psychological and sociological bases of
behavior. This program is dedicated to producing social workers who are
sensitive to and appreciate diversity, committed to social justice, and
prepared to empower individuals, families, groups, organizations and
communities.

Program graduates are prepared for professional practice with agencies that
provide services to those dealing with problems such as social functioning,
substance abuse, mental health issues, domestic violence, child protection,
aging and health concerns, school, employment, and legal issues. BSW
graduates are well-prepared for admission to most MSW graduate programs.

This degree program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education
(CSWE). Spring Arbor University is accredited by the North Central
Association of Colleges and Schools.

North Central Michigan College played an integral role in Spring Arbor's
decision to bring the BSW to Petoskey. Spring Arbor is a member of North
Central's University Center partnership. The partnership is designed to
help North Central students continue their education at four-year
institutions in a coordinated and cost-effective manner.

"This nationally accredited social work degree, never before offered
entirely on the campus of North Central Michigan College, can provide the
professional credentials to obtain an entry-level position in the human
service professions," said Paula Welmers, Ed.D., North Central counselor.
"Social workers find employment in a variety of settings, so it is a
flexible, people-oriented career area for our students."

Students enrolling in the BSW program qualify as full-time students and may
be eligible for financial aid. For those unable to receive financial aid,
alternative loan options and payment plans are available.
