2021 Commencement

Commencement FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS about our 2021 ceremony:

  • Why is commencement being held outdoors instead of indoors?
One of the safety protocols that makes it possible to plan an in-person commencement ceremony amid a regional uptick in COVID-19 cases is the fact that we will be celebrating outdoors.  Health experts tell us that outdoor activities are safer because there is increased ventilation and additional space to allow for 6' physical distancing, particularly if you will be in contact with individuals who don't live with you.

  • Can graduates invite guests to the ceremony?
Yes.  Each graduate who registers for commencement will receive one vehicle ticket.  The vehicle may include as many guests as the graduate would like to bring to the ceremony.  Please note that graduates and guests must remain inside the vehicle during the ceremony.

  • Where will the ceremony be held?
Commencement will be held outdoors in our Student and Community Resource Center parking lot.  Click here for a printable map.

  • What time is the ceremony?
Commencement will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 8.  The SCRC parking lot will be open at 10 a.m. for graduates and guests to begin arriving.

  • How will the ceremony be structured?
The ceremony will include a procession of college faculty and administration, welcome remarks from President Finley, a commencement address to the graduates, and a drive-through presentation of diplomas.

  • Will there be a photo booth set up for photo opportunities at the ceremony?
A professional photographer will take photos during the ceremony.  Photos will be available to each graduate at no cost.  Additional details will follow as the commencement dates near.

  • What if it rains on May 8?
If rain is forecast, the ceremony will be delayed until 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 8 (the same day).  Watch North Central's social media accounts on Friday evening and Saturday morning for notification of a rain delay.

  • Where do graduates pick up their cap and gowns for the ceremony?
For those who have RSVP’d to participate in the in-person ceremony, gowns and academic cords may be picked up between April 26—30, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. daily in AD/CL Room #38 (lower level).  If you have questions, please contact Nicki Morris at 231-348-6625 or Joe Balinski at 231-439-6347.

  • How can I get my stole for PTK?
Please contact PTK Advisor Chelse Hawkins-Olivo at 231-348-6829 for information.

  • I graduated in May 2020.  Can I attend the May 2021 ceremony?
Unfortunately, because of health and safety guidelines, North Central must limit the crowd capacity to ensure proper physical distancing.  Including previous graduates in our Spring 2021 ceremony would make it impossible to adhere to CDC guidelines on physical distancing.

  • What about Nurse Pinning?
North Central’s nurse pinning event, the unique ceremony that marks an individual’s transition from student to nurse, will be held in person during a “cruise-in” event on Friday, May 7, at 6 p.m. in the SCRC parking lot.  In case of rain, the ceremony will be delayed until 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 8.  Watch North Central's social media accounts on Friday morning for notification of a rain delay.

  • What if I can't attend the ceremony?
The ceremony will be broadcast via FM radio, and a recording will be available on the college’s website following the event.
