The new North Central Michigan College Gaylord Center will host an open house on Monday, December 11 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  The new center is located at 620 E. 5th Street (former Early Childhood Center) near Gaylord Middle School. This center is the result of a partnership with the Gaylord Community Schools (GCS) and North Central Michigan College, begun earlier in 2017. A ribbon-cutting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Appetizers and refreshments will be served.

The center will contain five classrooms which includes a science lab, and a student lounge.  All classrooms will be collaborative learning spaces with state-of-the-art technology.  The Gaylord Center will open its doors for students on Monday, January 8, 2018.

Brian Pearson, GCS superintendent, said the district and North Central have looked into the potential for a Gaylord-based campus since last year and cited a growing enrollment in the GCS and North Central joint Early College Program as a catalyst. “Our early college partnership with North Central has grown beyond original expectations.  The creation of the North Central Gaylord site will provide increased opportunities for our students and strengthen the higher education offerings for the community,” states Pearson.

The center will be used by the more than 180 Early College students at Gaylord High School, as well as by students in the Otsego area. North Central also has the Straits Area Education Center in Cheboygan, as well as its main campus in Petoskey.

“Gaylord is growing, our programs in Gaylord are growing, and this is just a tremendous opportunity for our students in the Gaylord High School Early College Program as well as all the residents of Otsego County who are seeking a college degree,” states Dr. Cameron Brunet-Koch, president of North Central Michigan College. Pearson agrees, “The opening of the Gaylord North Central site on the GCS campus demonstrates a commitment by both GCS and North Central Michigan College to the early college concept today and into the future.  This expansion helps GCS move closer to having every student exit career and college ready.”
