ATD Announces 2016 Student Success Exemplars

Achieving the Dream (ATD) redesignated North Central Michigan College as a “Leader College,” a national honor awarded to institutions in the ATD National Network that have shown three years of steady improvement in two outcomes that measure student success.

“Leader College status represents a sustained, successful effort to build a student-centered culture,” said Dr. Karen A. Stout, president and CEO of Achieving the Dream. “Colleges that stay focused on the hard work of transformation deserve to be recognized when they make measurable progress.”

“Leader College designations are granted in three-year cycles,” stated Dr. Cameron Brunet-Koch, president of the College. “This is the second time in the six years that North Central has been a member of Achieving the Dream that North Central has received this honor.”

North Central received the current designation for consistent progress in two areas.  Over the past five years, there has been an increase in completion in the gateway English courses from less than 40% to more than 50%. Also, North Central is seeing fall-to-winter retention of new students steadily improving from 70% to 81%. The retention among full-time students has been relatively steady at 80-85%, however the improvement has been quite substantial among part-time students, with their retention improving from 60% to more than 70%.

Leader Colleges are eligible to compete for all grant-funded learning initiatives offered by ATD and are encouraged to provide leadership and support to other colleges in the ATD network, disseminate lessons learned, support state and national efforts to advance the student success agenda, and continue to improve student outcomes.

This year, Achieving the Dream designated four institutions as Leader Colleges for the first time and recertified 17 Leader Colleges.
