The winner of the 2018 Robert Emmet Society’s annual scholarship to Ireland is Lakrisha Dillworth of Ann Arbor.  She is the 20th recipient of the memorial award and the 15th to spend the fall semester at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology studying Irish history and culture. As the 2018 winner, Ms. Dillworth earns a round-trip flight to Ireland, free tuition for the fall semester, lodging and books at GMIT.

The competition is open to all North Central Michigan College students enrolled in an academic program at the college.  When Ms. Dillworth graduates next year, she plans to attend Eastern Michigan University to pursue a major in construction management.

Lakrisha is excited to be immersed into a different culture. “My siblings and I made even the smallest things into family traditions.  Living in Ann Arbor nearly my whole life, I’ve had the chance of sharing not only our traditions but the culture I’ve grown up in, with people from all over the world.  I can’t wait to learn about the cultural traditions while studying in Ireland.”

The award honors Joseph W. McCarthy, a local businessman, and Dr. William McCullough, a Petoskey physician, who were active members of the society since its founding in the early 1990’s. Its purpose is to promote awareness in Emmet County of its namesake, Robert Emmet, an Irish patriot executed by the British for leading a revolt against Ireland’s long-time rulers.

North Central, GMIT and the Robert Emmet Society have been co-sponsors of the competition since 1999.  It is the only scholarship awarded by the College that sends a student abroad for study.  The competition is based on an essay contest, academic achievement, student activities and an interview with College and society representatives.
