The college campus continues to employ measures aimed at ensuring a safe, seamless transition to the Fall semester, which begins on September 7 .

A Health Email (health@ncmich.edu) is available to provide a method for individuals to submit issues of noncompliance or ask health-related questions.

The College is following its Return to Campus Plan and the Reopening Grid and is fully prepared and excited to welcome students, faculty, and staff back to campus for the Fall 2021 semester.

COVID-19 has taught us that, as an institution, we can respond with flexibility in the face of crisis. We want to take the best of what we've learned and bring it forward into the next academic year. It's likely that some disruption from COVID-19 will continue into the winter of 2022. Our proactive response to that possibility continues to be the NC ADAPT initiative.

North Central Michigan College will adapt to disruptions caused by COVID-19 by providing face-to-face and remote instruction when necessary.

NC ADAPT also means the college will be ready to help you respond to financial changes or a lack of reliable internet. If your individual situation changes, stay in touch and keep the College aware of the challenges you're facing.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT NORTH CENTRAL THIS FALL

Please Note:

North Central Michigan College is following Phase 5 restrictions from our Re-Opening Plan/COVID-19 Response Grid.

 Here’s our safety blueprint.

  • The fall semester begins on Sept 7.
  • Student Services is currently taking appointments for advising. 
  • The fall semester class schedule has options for all different comfort levels: Face-to-face (F2F), hybrid (F2F and online) and entirely online classes. 
  • Please consider your surroundings and maintain a 3 ft. minimum social distance from others whenever possible.
  • Masks must be worn indoors.
  • Alcohol-based hand sanitizer dispensers, disposable wipes and sprays have been placed throughout campus. 
  • Frequent and comprehensive sanitation and disinfecting in all common areas, classrooms and residence hall are being performed. 
  • The Iron Horse Café will be open for Residence Hall students and operating according to social distancing guidelines and safety needs. 
  • The Residence Hall will be open with safety guidelines in place. Students are required to wear a mask in the dorm when outside their room through October 1.

NEW STUDENTS CAN USE SELF-REPORTED GPA FOR PLACEMENT

New students can now use their self-reported high school GPA to determine placement into English and math courses.  Students may also submit an ACT or SAT score if they have taken either test in the past.  Those students who have neither a high school GPA or an ACT or SAT score can take an ACCUPLACER test through Learning Support Services at lss@ncmich.edu.  

“We know that prospective students have a lot on their plate, from completing their senior year of high school online to caring for their families during this pandemic,” said Renee DeYoung, vice president of Student Affairs.  “Our goal is to make the next step as easy as possible by eliminating as many potential barriers as we can.” 

FLEXIBLE SCHOLARSHIP DISTRIBUTION 

Finally, multiple scholarship application cycles give students more flexibility to apply for scholarship dollars.  An application cycle that opens June  and runs through August is for scholarships to be awarded for the Fall 2021 semester.  The next cycle, which runs October  – November, is for scholarships to be awarded for the Winter 2022 semester.

 “Multiple application cycles will allow us to distribute scholarship funds more equitably throughout the year,” said Katie Malone, director of Financial Aid.  “Students who decide late in the summer to attend North Central beginning in the fall will not be at a disadvantage relative to students who applied for scholarships earlier in the year.”

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

The college’s Student Emergency Fund, which awards grants to students who are experiencing unexpected financial hardships that threaten their academic success, is open to all North Central students.  Thanks in part to the generosity of donors during the college’s “North Central Cares” campaign, many students received and are receiving support to help with unexpected expenses.  Applications for Student Emergency Fund dollars are open, and financial assistance is awarded daily.  For more information, contact Renee DeYoung at 231-348-6618 or rdeyoung@ncmich.edu.

Counseling Services

Mary A. Mummaw, MA, LPC, is a full-time counselor in our Student Services department. 

A North Central alumna, Mummaw received her bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University and her Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Western Michigan University.

Mummaw attributes her successful career to a personal experience she had with a North Central counselor, someone who encouraged her and helped her build the future she wanted for her family.

“When I was a struggling single mother, my North Central counselor provided the roadmap I so desperately needed,” Mummaw said.  “More importantly, he made me believe that I was entirely capable of achieving it.”

Campus Cupboard

The Campus Cupboard is a year-round food pantry established to support the students of North Central who may be dealing with food insecurity.

The Campus Cupboard provides students and their families with nutritious foods and personal care items. Faculty, staff, students, community members and many community-based organizations work together to provide these items to NCMC students conveniently and discreetly throughout the year.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

North Central provides a wide range of academic support services to help students succeed.

Learning Support Services

Learning Support Services (LSS) is located in the Student and Community Resource Center (SCRC) and offers a quiet study area, tutoring services, test proctoring and materials to improve study skills.  Learning Support Services’ mission is to provide individualized services, resources and support to assist all students. Our goal is to help students become independent learners who achieve their personal and academic goals. 

Services offered by LSS include:

  • Accessibility and Disability Services
    • For accessibility and disability services, call 231-348-6682, or email lss@ncmich.edu.
  • Tutoring
    • Free tutoring is available to North Central Michigan College students on a peer-to-peer basis, in small groups, or through study skills support tutoring. LSS staffs two part-time professional tutors for math and nursing at the Petoskey campus. Peer tutors have successfully completed the course they are tutoring with a B or above, and maintain a 3.0 GPA or above, and/or have been recommended by an instructor for a specific class. Peer tutors may be arranged at off-campus sites as well, per request.
  • Test Proctoring
    • ACCUPLACER, General Education Development (GED), DANTES Subject Standardized Test (DSST), and placement tests for North Central English courses are all available through LSS.
  • Study Support
    • LSS offers in-house support, as well as coordination with other campus programs and faculty, to provide academic support to all students.  Publications such as study support, study skills, organization, prioritization, apps listings and personalized study plans are offered to all North Central students.
  • Math Lab
    • The Math Lab includes a study area and tutoring to assist students who may need additional math support. Computers in the math lab are equipped with the current North Central math curriculum software and are available during LSS’s office hours. 
  • Writing Center
    • North Central’s Writing Center is available to help students with the writing process.  Students may schedule a peer-to-peer session available via Zoom meeting software or over the phone with Google Docs.  Tutors can help students adapt to this technology.
  • Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan
    • The Women's Resource Center of Northern Michigan (WRCNM) program provides comprehensive educational support, job search assistance, financial scholarships (tuition, text, and childcare), community connections, advocacy and referrals. WRCNM advocates on behalf of students to assist in overcoming barriers and moving forward. Personal counseling is also available by appointment.
  • WOCTEP
    • The Waganakising Odawa Career and Technical Education Program (WOCTEP) operates within the Education Department of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (LTBB), offering certificate and associate programs in partnership with North Central Michigan College. WOCTEP advisors visit the campus, utilizing LSS’s multipurpose office or conference room to meet with students.  High school graduates, GED graduates and college students may enroll in WOCTEP.

Coaching Program

North Central’s Coaching Program is built on the idea that everyone, especially students who are the first in their family to attend college, can benefit from having a “go-to” person at the college.  Your coach can help you navigate your college experience, and a personal connection between a student and a coach can be a game-changer.

Career Coach is a free, web-based tool that gives students the power to explore hundreds of potential careers while providing them with the information necessary to make informed decisions about their career and educational plans.  Our academic advisors are available to discuss your results and assist with creating your personalized academic plan to put you on the path to your ideal career.

Student Clubs & Organizations

North Central offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities to enrich the college experience, including Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Residence Hall Council, Student Senate, Student Veterans Association, Student Nurses Association, Fusion Campus Ministry, and co-ed running and ski clubs.

NC ADAPT is a comprehensive plan that leverages resources from across NCMC’s campus to ensure student, faculty, staff, and community success and safety in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Classes will be taught face-to-face on campus, hybrid (F2F and online) and entirely online.

A plan to flex courses between delivery modes where necessary for public health or curricular demands will allow us to move seamlessly between formats if it is necessary for the safety of our students, faculty and staff.

Students will be able to return to campus. However, if social distancing requirements are once again introduced during the Winter 2021 semester, the College will respond as needed. This means that you could be given the choice to return home (if possible) or be asked to learn remotely from your home or residence hall.

The residence hall has some new guidelines to ensure the safety of our Res Hall students:

  • No guests will be allowed inside the Residence Hall after dorm move-in occurs.
  • We are holding our Residence Hall at limited capacity to keep each dorm room at single occupancy, ensuring your space and safety.
  • Masks are required when you’re outside your own room, and social distancing will be observed in all common areas.
  • Use of the Res Hall kitchens will be limited to one student at a time.
  • Report any suspected Covid-19 symptoms to the on-site Res Hall Director immediately; quarantine rooms will be available for students who suspect they are ill.

The Iron Horse Café will be set up for social distancing:

  • Hand sanitizer stations are available at both café entrances.
  • We’ve installed sneeze guards at the cash register.
  • Our dining room will be held at 50% capacity.
  • Floor signage will remind guests about one-way traffic patterns.
  • IHC staff will undergo temperature checks before reporting to work.
  • All Health Department and food service guidelines will be strictly followed.

We're planning for the winter semester. We are prepared to continue using NC ADAPT as long as there's a possibility that the COVID-19 pandemic could require us to shift to other modes of delivery in the interest of public health. 

Yes; we’ve all got different comfort levels, and our Winter schedule has something for everyone:  F2F, hybrid (F2F and online) and entirely online classes. There is also a plan to flex courses between delivery modes where necessary for public health or curricular demands that will allow us “to move seamlessly between formats if it is necessary for the safety of our students, faculty and staff. 

Stringent safety protocols to prevent infection, including appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), social distancing, and disinfection as recommended by the Health Dept. of Northwest Michigan will be utilized. Whenever practical, computer simulation and/or alternative lab experiences will be employed.

For students who do not have reliable access to high-speed internet or technology at their residence, Wi-Fi is available on our Petoskey campus in the library parking lot 24/7, as well as the parking lots closest to the buildings at the Cheboygan and Gaylord sites.

  • Great Lakes Energy has announced free access to Truestream high-speed Wi-Fi at several parking lots in Emmet and Charlevoix counties:

Our Learning Support Services department offers excellent academic support services, even if you're not on campus.  Please contact LSS staff at lss@ncmich.edu for details.

It is expected that Student Senate, Phi Theta Kappa, North Central's Student Nurses Association and Student Veterans Association will operate, either in person or virtually, during the 2020-2021 academic year.  Should adjustments have to made to account for proper social distancing, our student leadership and club advisors will communicate to members as necessary.

Campus events are a big part of the college experience, and we are hopeful that events may return to normal sometime during the 2021 academic year.  However, we recognize the need to be creative and flexible with how events are offered, and we are prepared to adapt as necessary.

Financial aid refunds will be issued as follows:

Financial aid award payments are applied to students’ accounts each semester of enrollment within two weeks following the add/drop final date at the beginning of the semester.  Student loans to first time borrowers are applied to students’ accounts approximately 30 days after the start date of the semester per U.S. Department of Education regulations.  Refunds for aid that exceed tuition, fees, books and campus housing and meal plan, if applicable, are issued within 14 days of the award payment to the student’s account.
