North Central Cross Country Team takes 3rd in Kirtland CC Invitational - Sept. 18

In the first event of the 2020 season the NCMC Women’s Cross Country team traveled to Hanson Hills Recreational Center in Grayling to compete in the Kirtland Invitational. This year’s event saw an increase of teams and competitors from Michigan Community Colleges. With a small but dedicated roster this year the North Central Women saw immediate success earning a 3rd place finish.

Jackson College led all teams with 12 points, followed by Kellogg Community College with 40. To claim the 3rd place position the North Central runners edged out the Bay College team 74 to 79. Rounding out the team competition was hosts Kirtland College with 92 points.

Kenzie Haas and Korrie Haas were the lone competitors for the North Central team for this event and paced out great finishes for the early start to the season. Kenzie led the team with a 7th place finish overall in a time of 23:24.8 in the women’s 5K race. Korrie added a strong 10th place finish with a 24:41.6.

The team returns to competition on Friday, October 2nd where they once again travel to Hansen Hills in Grayling to compete in the Firebird Invitational. On Sunday, October 4th members of the North Central Michigan College Cross Country team will compete in the Run Michigan Cheap 5K at East Bay Park in Petoskey.

North Central Runners Lead the Way in Weekend Events - Oct. 2

The North Central Cross Country team was back at it again this weekend, with members participating at either the Firebird Invitational or the Run Michigan Cheap - Petoskey 5K at East Bay Park.

Ben Bollinger led the way in the local 5K winning both his age group and the overall race with a time of 20:06. Following shortly thereafter, Hilary Way crossed the line in 20:20 to take the women’s race.

Placing 3rd overall, 2nd in the women’s race, and 1st in her age group was Natalia Taylor with a 22:03. Grace Laurence ran a 23:53 and finished 2nd her age group while Sydney Bess rounded out the squad with 3rd place in her age group in a time of 34:03. For these members the Run Michigan Cheap-Petoskey 5K was their first race of the season and proved to be an exciting and successful run, despite the cold, wet and windy conditions.

Representing North Central Michigan College at the Firebird Invitational, hosted by Kirkland Community College were veteran runners Kenzie & Korrie Haas. Having just competed at this venue two weeks prior they took their knowledge of the course with their increased training and saw good improvements on their times. “The Firebird Invitational is a full conference meet for those teams in the Michigan Community Colleges Athletic Association. As North Central aims to build our programs and athletic offerings being invited to participate in these high level events really allows us to prepare and plan for the future,” remarked Athletic Director Ashley Antonishen.

In a highly competitive race on a challenging course both Kenzie and Korrie finished in the top half of all Michigan Community College runners. Kenzie finished the 5 kilometer race in 19th place with a time of 22:51.6, and Korrie finished in 31st place with a time of 24:03.7.

Rod Anderson, coach of North Central’s cross country team, commented on the quality of effort for all runners in both races.  “All our athletes have trained well over these past weeks, and each is now seeing the benefit of quality training.  They have established goals, and have accepted, and given, the considerable effort it takes to improve and achieve those goals.  I am impressed with each person on this team.”

Next up several members of the NCMC team will travel to Escanaba for the Bay College Norse Invitational on Saturday, October 10th.

North Central Women’s Cross Country team wins Bay College Invitational - Oct. 10

The North Central Women’s Cross Country team secured their first team win and individual meet champion on Saturday at the Bay College Invitational in Gladstone, MI. North Central’s runners took the top 3 spots to secure the team win, led by Charlevoix native, Hilary Way.

On a cold and windy race day the NCMC women proved to be tough competitors both mentally and physically. Way crossed the 5K finish line to lead all runners with a time of 21:36, followed by Kenzie Haas at 22:26 (2nd place) and Korrie Haas at 24:02 (3rd place). Finishing in 8th place and helping secure the team win was Sydney Bess who posted a time of 31:34.

The team took the top accolade home with a score of 25 points, followed by Bay College at 33, and Kirtland with 45. The team, in just its second year of existence has earned 2nd, 3rd and now 1st place finishes in races against Michigan Community College varsity teams.

Coach Anderson was pleased with his team’s effort and had positive remarks following the event, “All four raced exceptionally well, particularly given the windy conditions.  As a team, our focus has been on the importance of exceptional effort to meet challenges, even when doing so is not comfortable.  I have no doubt these four women pushed themselves, gave their full effort, and met the challenge of this race.  Their results speak for themselves.”

NCMC Cross Country hosts end of season Trick-or-Trot 5K for Campus Community - Oct. 24

Fellow students, North Central faculty, staff and even Batman himself joined the NCMC Cross Country team for a fun, Halloween themed 5K run to end the season on Saturday. The cold weather and snow flurries didn’t bother the group as they showed up in costumes to run together and celebrate a successful Cross Country season.

The race was held on a challenging and hilly 5K course and everyone who attended left with smiles and candy thanks to Student Senate who sponsored the costume contest portion of the event. Spoiler alert! Dr. Finley was one of the top costume award winners as a very convincing Batman.

This concludes the 2020 season for our NCMC Cross Country team who saw great success this season.
