How Rachel Pott used internship experience and support from NCMC Career Services to launch her marketing career
After earning her bachelor's degree in marketing from Northern Michigan University and returning to Northern Michigan to be closer to family, Rachel Pott faced a challenge familiar to many recent graduates: turning her education and experience into a career.
As she searched for opportunities after graduation, Pott found herself navigating the uncertainties that often accompany a professional job search. To strengthen her resume, prepare for interviews, and identify potential opportunities, Pott turned to North Central Michigan College's Career Services office.
"The job search process can be extremely challenging and frustrating, but NCMC Career Services supported me every step of the way," Pott said. "From ensuring my resume passed ATS systems to preparing me for interviews, the guidance I received helped me confidently navigate my job search."
That support ultimately helped connect her with an internship opportunity at the Northern Lakes Economic Alliance (NLEA), an experience that later became a full-time position.
Exploring possibilities, gaining experience
Pott's journey began at North Central, where she enrolled because of the college's affordability, flexibility, and proximity to home. Although she knew she wanted to attend college, she wasn't yet certain what career path she wanted to pursue.
While earning an associate degree in general studies, Pott completed an internship with North Central's Marketing Department.
"My time at North Central equipped me with not only knowledge, but also real-world experience that prepared me for my career," Pott said. "Through my internship with NCMC's Marketing Department, I was able to see firsthand the career opportunities available after graduation and the skill sets needed to succeed in my field. Gaining this experience so early in my education was pivotal in preparing me for my future career."
Career Services support
After graduating from North Central in 2023, Pott transferred to Northern Michigan University to pursue a bachelor's degree in marketing. Following graduation, she returned to Northern Michigan and began searching for opportunities to launch her career.
When NCMC Career Development Specialist Wendy Kresnak shared an internship posting with the NLEA and encouraged her to apply, Pott took the next step.
She joined the organization as a marketing and events coordinator intern. The internship provided valuable hands-on marketing experience while introducing her to the NLEA's work supporting economic development throughout the region. It later evolved into a full-time role.
"Wendy and North Central's Career Services played a key role in helping me get there," Pott said. "She shared the job posting with me, believed I would be a strong candidate, and encouraged me to apply."
Building a career
"Through her dedication and strong performance, Rachel has since earned a permanent position with the organization," Kresnak said.
Pott now serves as NLEA’s engagement coordinator, supporting outreach initiatives, publications, and educational events.
"I am still discovering what my long-term career path will look like, but right now my focus is on gaining new experiences and continuing to learn. I want to take on opportunities that challenge me, expand my skill set, and help me better understand where my strengths and passions align. Over time, I hope to grow into roles where I can lead, contribute meaningfully, and make a positive impact in my community."
