North Central Michigan College has partnered with Michigan State University Extension to install an Enviroweather station on the far east end of campus, providing another learning resource to students and community members.

The Campbell Weather Station is the latest addition to MSU’s Enviroweather project, which maps and publishes data from weather stations across the state.  The new station, which is located west of McDougal Road on North Country Trail property owned by the college, measures air temperature, rainfall, relative humidity, dewpoint, and wind direction and speed.  Its data will be available on MSU’s Enviroweather website soon, supplementing data collected by the Enviroweather station located at Resort Pike Cidery and Winery.

“The installation of an Enviroweather station is yet another great addition to the technology available to students on campus,” said North Central President David Roland Finley, Ph.D., who is a meteorologist by training.  “Northern Michigan boasts a unique climate, and this resource will allow us to track and archive data to see the effects of weather on our soil conditions and crop growth, among other important trends.”

North Central Chemistry Professor David Rodgers, who monitors another weather station on the campus, this one linked into the MesoWest network, said the MSU weather station will also be useful for limiting travel to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.

“MSU personnel took video of the installation in order to make training presentations for maintenance purposes that will be promulgated to the other Enviroweather site contacts across the state,” Rodgers said.  “This will hopefully minimize the necessities of travel from MSU to and from the individual sites.”
