ROBERT EMMET EVENT SUPPORTS NCMC STUDENT’S STUDY IN IRELAND
Donor support will once again fund a North Central Michigan College student’s study abroad experience in Ireland. A recent event held on Robert Emmet Society’s Day of Remembrance raised more than $1,000 toward a semester of study at the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) in Galway, Ireland, in Fall 2020.
The Robert Emmet Society (RES) Scholarship, which requires approximately $2,500 in additional support to be fully funded for next fall’s scholarship, has been made possible by supporters and members of the Robert Emmet Society for more than 20 years. It offers a North Central student the unique experience to study in the homeland of Irish patriot Robert Emmet, the namesake of Emmet County. It is an initiative that is in keeping with the college’s mission of providing educational and cultural opportunities for student learning, personal growth, and community improvement.
“This unique scholarship provides a life-changing opportunity for our North Central students,” said Chelsea Platte, executive director of the NCMC Foundation. “We are incredibly grateful for the commitment and support provided by the Robert Emmet Society.”
North Central will begin accepting applications for the 2020 Robert Emmet Society scholarship in January. Finalists are chosen for interviews based on the quality of their essay response to the question, “How do the political values of Robert Emmet relate to our world and our lives today?” Finalists are judged by a panel of readers from North Central and the Robert Emmet Society as potential “ambassadors” for the society, North Central Michigan College, and the country.
Lakrisha Dillworth, the 2018 Robert Emmet Society scholarship recipient, received a plaque commemorating her experience. She was recognized at the event by George Colburn, RES co-founder, and Dr. Pete Olson, North Central’s vice president of academic affairs and student success.
This and many other scholarships are provided by donors to the NCMC Foundation. For more information, including how to make a gift to support North Central students, contact the NCMC Foundation at (231) 348-6621.
