North Central Michigan College (NCMC) is expanding its skilled trades offerings this fall with new hands-on training opportunities designed to help meet growing workforce demand across Northern Michigan’s construction and manufacturing industries.
The college’s new Martin Jahn Technology Center, which opens August 31, will provide dedicated instructional space for welding, CNC machining, and HVACR. The facility significantly expands opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience using industry-standard equipment.
NCMC will also launch a new carpentry program this fall in partnership with the Greater Michigan Construction Academy (GMCA) and Birchwood Construction. Through the public-private partnership, students will receive industry-aligned instruction and practical experience in residential construction, preparing them for entry-level employment and continued training in the skilled trades.

Birchwood Construction, a Northern Michigan-based construction company, will serve as a key employer and site partner in launching the carpentry program.

The expansion reflects North Central's strategy of working closely with employers to ensure training aligns with regional workforce needs. Industry partnerships help students gain relevant experience while creating a stronger pipeline of skilled workers for Northern Michigan employers.
