UPDATES COMING TO NORTH CENTRAL’S STUDENT AND COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTER

New safety procedures and equipment, updated fee structure coming to gym and fitness center when it reopens September 8

North Central Michigan College’s Student and Community Resource Center (SCRC) will reopen to the public on September 8 with new safety procedures, new equipment, and an updated fee structure that more closely aligns with how patrons utilize the gym and fitness center.

The SCRC will switch from a tuition-based model to a fee-based model upon reopening.  The new pricing structure will simplify the process for patrons, who will no longer need to register for a PE class in order to use the gym and fitness center.

The majority of SCRC patrons have chosen to audit a PE class in order to use the fitness center, explained SCRC Director Dallas Culvahouse.  Because they were auditing the class, they received no college credit and were not subject to a grade.

“Auditing a course has its advantages, but some patrons have audited our PE courses for 20 consecutive semesters,” said Culvahouse.  “It has become clear to us that that’s not the lens through which they are viewing the SCRC.”

Patrons will now bypass Student Services and handle all of their registration needs in the SCRC, ensuring a more streamlined process.  The new fitness room fee structure reflects a discount for Emmet County taxpayers.

Patrons may use the courts for basketball or pickleball by paying a daily rate or purchasing a punch pass.  The COURT daily rate is $3/person (children ages 6 and under are free with adult supervision).  A 10-visit punch pass is $30, a 25-visit punch pass is $60, and a 50-visit punch pass is $90.

Full- or half-court rental is available to sports teams and organizations for games, tournaments, or practices at a rate of $50/hour or $25/hour, respectively.  Call 231-439-6370 for court availability.

Community members will continue to be able to use the indoor walking track at no cost.

SCRC team members have spent the summer preparing to reopen in a manner that ensures the health and safety of patrons.  Safety measures include visual cues for social distancing and mask wearing, multiple sanitation stations, limited capacity in the fitness rooms, and processes for staff cleaning of equipment.

Four new weight machines and five new elliptical machines have been added to the fitness center.

“Our team is ready to reopen, and we’re excited to give our patrons an even better SCRC experience,” Culvahouse said.
